The four costs behind one FBT order

  • Inbound shipping. Freight from you or your supplier to the FBT warehouse. It’s paid per shipment, so divide it by the units in that shipment. Sellers forget this one most often, because it’s paid long before the sale.
  • Fulfillment fee. Covers pick, pack, packaging and last-mile delivery to the shopper, charged per unit. The rate depends on chargeable weight and on how many units ship together: orders with more units pay less per unit.
  • Storage. Free for the first 60 days of each inbound shipment. After that it’s charged daily on total cubic feet, including defective units, so it’s a volume cost, not a weight cost.
  • Return handling. Charged on units that come back. Spread across every unit you sell, its real cost per unit is the fee × your return rate.

Chargeable weight: why the box can cost more than the product

TikTok doesn’t always bill on what the unit weighs. The rule (effective May 1, 2026):

  • Unit weighs 2 lb or less and is 332 in³ or less: billed on actual weight.
  • Otherwise: billed on the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, where dimensional weight = length × width × height (inches) ÷ 166.

Take a 1 lb candle. In a 9 × 6 × 3 in box (162 in³) it’s under both limits and bills at 1 lb. Ship the same candle in a 12 × 10 × 6 in box (720 in³) and it goes over the volume limit. Dimensional weight is 720 ÷ 166 = 4.34 lb, so you pay for 4.34 lb, more than four times what the candle weighs, because of the empty space in the box.

So the cheapest FBT fix is usually the packaging, not the price. Check the chargeable-weight panel in the calculator before you send a new SKU in. If it says dimensional weight applies, a smaller box can drop the unit into a lighter tier.

Why the FBT rates you find online are probably out of date

TikTok changed the FBT rate card three times in 2026 alone: lower single-unit fulfillment fees from May 20, higher per-unit fees on multi-unit orders from June 18, and a heavy and bulky tier added from July 13. On June 1 the flat per-order return handling fee became itemized per-unit fees that depend on what happens to the returned unit (resold, liquidated or disposed of).

Many fee guides and calculators still quote the January figures. This page leaves the dollar rates for you to enter from TikTok’s FBT Rate Card and only builds in the rules, which change less often. When the rate card changes, update the inputs.

Storage is where slow sellers lose money

Storage per unit = cubic feet per unit × monthly rate × months past day 60. A unit that sells in six weeks never pays storage. A unit that sits for five months pays three months of it, at rates that go up as stock ages.

The worst case is a bulky product that sells slowly. Using an illustrative $1.00 per ft³ per month (not TikTok’s rate; use yours): a 12 × 10 × 6 in unit is 0.42 ft³, so 120 days in storage adds 0.42 × $1.00 × 2 = $0.83 per unit. That’s before the dimensional-weight fulfillment fee. Send in inventory for about 60 days of sales rather than a whole production run, and storage mostly disappears.

FBT vs shipping it yourself

On cost alone, compare the FBT total with what one order costs you now: the label, plus the mailer, the filler and your time (or your 3PL’s pick-and-pack fee). If you value your time at zero, self-shipping will look cheaper than it is.

Cost isn’t the whole comparison. TikTok advertises free 3-day delivery and 24-hour processing for eligible FBT items, and faster delivery can sell more. The calculator measures only the cost side, so read a small FBT premium as the price of that speed, not automatically as a loss.

How much does Fulfilled by TikTok cost per unit?

There is no single number. The fulfillment fee depends on the unit's chargeable weight and how many units are in the order, and TikTok revised the rate card three times between May and July 2026. On top of it come inbound shipping, storage after the first 60 days, and return handling. Read your fee off the current rate card and enter it in the calculator to get your all-in cost.

What does the FBT fulfillment fee include?

Pick, pack, packaging, and last-mile shipping to the shopper, charged per unit. It does not include getting your stock into the FBT warehouse, storage, or return handling. Those are separate costs.

How does TikTok calculate FBT dimensional weight?

If a unit weighs 2 lb or less and its volume is 332 cubic inches or less, TikTok charges on actual weight. Otherwise the chargeable weight is the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, which is length × width × height in inches ÷ 166.

Is FBT storage free?

For the first 60 days of each inbound shipment. After that, storage is charged daily on the total cubic feet of your units, including defective ones, at a rate that rises the longer stock sits.

Is FBT cheaper than shipping orders myself?
