Why your TikTok Shop payout is less than your sales
Because they are two different measurements. Your dashboard reports GMV — the gross value of orders placed. Your bank receives settlement — what TikTok pays out on delivered orders after every deduction. Expecting them to match is the mistake; the useful work is knowing exactly what sits between them.

The referral fee, and the platform-discount trap
The US referral fee has been 6% per order since April 1, 2024, across most categories. That part is well known. The part that surprises sellers is the formula TikTok uses to apply it:
referral fee = rate × (customer payment + platform discount − tax)
Read that middle term again. The platform discount is added back before the fee is calculated. TikTok’s own worked example: an order where the customer pays $102, with a $5 platform discount and $2 tax, is charged 6% × ($102 + $5 − $2) = $6.30.
So when you join a platform promotion, you are charged referral fees on money that never reached you. It is a small line per order and an invisible one at scale — which is precisely why it turns up as an unexplained gap rather than a decision anyone consciously made.
Refunds don’t reset to zero
A refunded order is worse than a sale that never happened. You lose the revenue, you have usually already paid to ship the product, you may not get it back in resellable condition — and TikTok retains a refund administration fee of 20% of the original referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU type. (That cap has applied since May 15, 2025; TikTok does not charge the fee on creator sample order refunds or eligible pre-shipment auto-cancellations.)
The cap keeps this line small in dollar terms. Its real cost is reconciliation friction: it is one more deduction that doesn’t correspond to any row in your sales report.
Working an example end to end
Here is the full walk from GMV to settlement. The mechanics below are TikTok’s published policy; the inputs are illustrative numbers chosen to make the arithmetic legible — they are not survey data, and your own creator mix, fulfillment cost, and return rate will differ.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| GMV — what the dashboard shows | $5,000.00 |
| Referral fee (6% of GMV) | − $300.00 |
| Creator commissions (15% on 50% of orders) | − $375.00 |
| Fulfillment ($3.58 × 100 units) | − $358.00 |
| Refunded revenue (5 orders) | − $250.00 |
| Refund administration fee (20% of referral, capped $5/SKU) | − $3.00 |
| Settlement — what reaches your bank | $3,714.00 |
$5,000.00 of sales becomes $3,714.00 of settlement — the channel absorbed 25.7% of GMV before your product cost is even considered. Subtract COGS and the number that actually matters, net profit, is smaller still.
Note what is not in that table: your product cost. TikTok never sees it, so no TikTok report can show you profit. Settlement is the closest the platform gets, and it is still only half the equation.
Timing widens the gap further
Even the settlement figure above doesn’t arrive at once. Payouts are initiated 1–31 days after each order is delivered, by settlement tier, and a reserve is held for 30 days from the delivery date against future returns. So a month’s GMV resolves into cash over a considerably longer and more variable window — the mechanics are in the payout schedule guide.
How to actually reconcile it
- Stop reconciling against GMV. Pull the settled figure per order — it is the only number that reflects what TikTok really charged.
- Break settlement down per SKU, not per shop. Blended margins hide the products that are quietly underwater.
- Attach your cost per unit to each SKU. Settlement minus COGS is real profit; everything above that line is revenue theater.
- Watch the fee lines as a percentage of revenue over time. Creator commission mix moves this more than the 6% referral fee ever will.
Doing that by hand across dozens of SKUs is the spreadsheet grind this site exists to kill. MarginReady connects to your TikTok Shop account, pulls your real settled transactions, subtracts the COGS you enter, and shows true profit per SKU. To model a product before you list it, use the fee calculator or the break-even price calculator.
